William Marwood Executioner Death Inquest & Burial

The Horncastle Executioner, William Marwood died in 1883 and it is generally believed that his body is buried in an unmarked grave (to avoid retribution) in the Trinity Church in Horncastle.

An account of the inquest on his body was given in many of the local and national newspapers. Here is the article from the Western Daily Press – Friday 07 September 1883: (Notice the report is ”By Telegraph”, which is essentially a ‘press release’.)

An inquest was ordered as foul play was suspected, but the post mortem concluded he died from ”acute pneumonia, accelerated by the diseased condition of the liver and kidneys”, and a verdict of ‘natural causes’ was concluded.

The article concludes by stating Marwood was buried in the Trinity Churchyard.

However, I have reason to believe that he was NOT buried in the Trinity Church, but was, in fact, buried in the Parish Church of St Mary in Horncastle!

The entry for William Marwood the National Burial Index states that he was buried on 6th September, 1883, aged 63, in St Mary’s Horncastle.

The following is the actual burial record in the church register.

The initial intention to mislead the public into believing Marwood’s body lay in the Trinity Church has, apparently, been upheld for the past 130 years, but now, the belief has been dispelled, as the church records are proof of William Marwood’s final resting place!
