Garsington Opera’s Hansel & Gretel and the Wimbledon Men’s Singles Final Live On Skegness Beach

A classic combination! Garsington Opera’s Hansel & Gretel and the Wimbledon Men’s Singles Final Live On Skegness Beach, Sunday 7 July

Noon – 1.45pm – Hansel & Gretel
2pm – Men’s Singles final
Following Andy Murray’s success in reaching the men’s singles final at Wimbledon, SO Festival has announced a change to its original programme as it will be showing the match live on Skegness’ award winning Central Beach.
Garsington Opera’s performance of Hansel & Gretel has been brought forward to 12 noon to allow the festival to stage the first ever screening of the Wimbledon’s men’s singles final on a UK beach.
The BBC has kindly granted East Lindsey District Council the rights to screen the match, which will see Murray bid to become Britain’s first Wimbledon Champion since Fred Perry in 1936.
The match starts at 2pm and the District Council and Festival Director, Robin Morley, are encouraging people to pack a picnic and arrive early to get the best view of both the opera and the tennis.
Robin, said: “We want to make sure that as many people as possible get to see both the world class opera from Garsington and Andy Murray’s second Wimbledon final. The best way to achieve this was to bring the screening of Hansel &Gretel forward to midday. We hope that this doesn’t inconvenience people and actually increases the number of people who will come down to Skegness beach to see both performances.
“We think that by showing the game on the UK’s largest outdoor screen , we might be setting two world records – the largest ever showing of a grand slam final and the first ever beach broadcast of Wimbledon.
“The combination of Garsington Opera and Wimbledon will be magical and we hope lots of people come down to Skegness beach to enjoy the occasion.”
As well as the tennis and opera, work by the University of Lincoln, the East Lindsey District Council funded Lancaster short film and other art will be shown on the 12.7 by 9.2 metre screen on Sunday.
SO Festival’s final day programme also includes Gone In 20 Minutes – a showcase of ground-breaking outdoor art and performance; Without Walls Touring Programme – an established national programme of developing high quality art productions; and SO Chilled – a showcase of Lincolnshire top music talent.
