Jolly Fisherman Enters Politics

Skegness Jolly Fisherman gets political 1980
THE use of the Jolly Fisherman for political purposes has been deplored by Skegness and District Trades Council. It decided to write to Skegness Town Council, who hold the copyright, drawing its attention to an alleged infringement by the Socialist Workers’ Party.
The vice-chairman, Mr Joe McPake, who is a chef at the Derbyshire Miners’ Holiday Centre, showed delegates a badge which was on sale at the party’s annual Easter conference at the centre. It showed the Jolly Fisherman with the words: “Tory wreckers can’t make me blue.”
Mr McPake said he objected to the town’s motif being used without permission, and Coun Bob Sadler thought its political application “a bit cheeky.”
