Skegness’ Jolly Fisherman is 100 years old!

SKEGNESS’ resort mascot, the Jolly Fisherman, is 100 years old this year and has even created his own website so everyone can join in the celebrations – www.jollyfisherman.co.uk
For the past century, Jolly, accompanied by the famous slogan ‘Skegness is so bracing’ has been bouncing along the town’s award winning golden sands sending a message of fun and excitement to those visiting what is still one of the country’s top holiday destinations.
Created as a railway poster in 1908 by artist John Hassall, Jolly is still seen by many as the key to Skegness’ success, giving the town a high profile across the globe. He still lives in Skegness meeting and greeting residents and visitors of all ages throughout the year and feels younger and more full of energy than ever despite being 100 years old. Jolly has already been congratulated by the Queen. To this day a statue of Jolly still greets visitors to Skegness on Platform A at Skegness Railway Station.

A number of special events are being organised throughout 2008 to involve the local community and visitors in Jolly’s birthday celebrations – more in the coming weeks.
Birthday messages can be sent to Jolly through his website and if you would like Jolly to attend your event contact his team at East Lindsey District Council on 08446 601111.
