Snow White Christmas Panto Skegness

Posted by Angela Gooch on December 27, 2007

You’ve still until the 30th of December if you haven’t yet seen Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at the Embassy Theatre, Skegness! You’d be well advised not to miss it!

From the first rising of the curtain, the audience is taken on a magical trip with all the usual fun, brilliant scenery, music and dance of a pantomime.
The panto starred Hollyoaks actress Connie Powney (below), and was directed by Maurice Thorogood with choreography by Bonnie Spencer.

Junior dancers from the Julie Stevens School of Dance gave an excellent performance as the ‘Magnificent Seven’, convincingly bringing the characters to life, and the senior dancers performed some excellent routines with skill in their glamorous costumes.

Brenda Longman, pictured below, gave a brilliant, commanding performance as the evil Queen Esmeralda, certainly deserving the usual ‘boos and hisses’ from the audience.

The script was brilliantly written and delivered, particularly by Dame Donut (Daniel Beales) and Muddles (Richard Cadell), appealing to both the children and the adults with off-the-cuff ad-libbing and references to topical news stories such as the Northern Rock collapse and the ‘losing’ of personal data by the government. A very funny scene was when Muddles brought on stage a bunch of flowers intended for the love of his life, Snow White. But when his mother, Dame Donut, told him his love was destined to be unrequited, the erect flowers immediately drooped. The children found this hilarious, and so did the adults - but for quite different reasons!

The audience witnessed dramatic special effects when Queen Esmeralda enquired of the Mirror who was the fairest in the land. A real life human face was magically superimposed in the Mirror!

The show was a non-stop magical wonderland, dishing up all the ingredients for a perfect pantomime.

‘Scarecrow Week’ is a tradition in many rural Lincolnshire villages, the custom connected with Lincolnshire being an argricultural county.
The scarecrows pop up in the most amusing places sometimes, here are some which we spotted.

John Curtis b1856 who built the Clock Tower is my sons’ Great Great Grandfather.
For this reason, I have created this separate ‘Sheffield Connection’ category to house the family tree members from Sheffield.

Bola Plans Released for Skegness Fire Parade Complex Site

Posted by Angela Gooch on December 19, 2007

HIGH ASPIRATIONS FOR NEW JOBS
ON THE LINCOLNSHIRE COAST
Hundreds of new jobs will be created in Skegness with the redevelopment of the former Parade Complex entertainment site on Grand Parade in the resort.
The Bola brothers Taj and T.K. are to invest up to fifteen million pounds to construct an ambitious stunning development that will enhance the town’s reputation as one of Britain’s leading holiday destinations.
Taj Bola for Paragon (Lincolnshire) Limited said “We can assure people it will not be another amusement arcade the resort is well catered for in that direction. We have a unique opportunity to broaden the appeal of Skegness; to open an amusement arcade would be very short sighted, though a certain way of making money. Its our view that this superb seafront location has to be earmarked for far better use to enhance the towns visitor experience to increase the potential of attracting greater numbers to the resort whilst working as a catalyst for further investment which is vital to the local and regional economy”.
He added, “We are currently considering several designs for the building and the facilities that it will house. Names such as Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsey are in the frame to be invited to open eateries, as are several blue chip national brand names to operate attractions within the complex. We are aiming high with a quality development that will achieve our vision of providing modern vibrant leisure venues in Skegness that can be enjoyed by both the local community and holidaymakers”.
The company envisage that plans for the development will be presented early in the New Year (2008).

Wainfleet Sleigh Day Christmas Fun

Posted by Angela Gooch on December 17, 2007

Wainfleet market place was a scene of joy and laughter this evening as folks gathered for the Wainfleet Sleigh Day.

The celebrations began with a torch-light procession, headed by a donkey and Santa on his sleigh, from Magdalen school into the market place. The children’s faces were a picture of delight as Santa tossed sweets into the crowd.

Wainfleet Sleigh Day

Gathering around the stage, the spectators listened to the Christmas Story read from the bible and said prayers before singing Christmas Carols and songs, accompanied by the Skegness Grammar School band.

It was fun and laughter when a race was held at the finish of the sing-along - who could go the faster, the crowd singing, or the band playing Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer!

The Singing Policeman, Mr Andy Steeples, rounded the evening off with a mellow version of Bing Crossby’s traditional Christmas Song, White Christmas; and the snow fell…

A fantastic evening!

Missed all the fun? Don’t worry, we captured the atmosphere on camera for you…

Nightstop goes live in East Lindsey

Posted by Angela Gooch on December 17, 2007

A NEW scheme has been launched in East Lindsey to help young homeless people who have no-where to go.
Co-ordinated by East Lindsey District Council and run by a group of volunteers, the Nightstop Scheme offers support for those aged between 16 and 25 years of age.

Volunteers provide up to three nights emergency accommodations in their home, as well as washing facilities, food and a friendly listening ear in a family environment.

Speaking of the scheme, one Nightstop user commented: “I had begun to think, why should I care about anyone? No-one cares about me. Then I found that some people - total strangers – did care. It was a turning point for me.”

Mac and Sue from Louth have recently signed up to become volunteers: They have experience working with young people. Sue said: “We saw a need for short term accommodation and felt able to provide a temporary home. We are now looking forward to hosting our first Nightstop guests.”

The Council’s Housing Research Officer, Helen Henning, said the scheme keeps a young person safe and in a friendly environment whilst allowing agencies time to find more permanent accommodation: “The Council is committed to helping some of the district’s most vulnerable residents get back on their feet and we believe this scheme will make a real and positive difference to the lives of many young people,” she explained.

Although the scheme is now up and running the Council is still looking for more volunteers. If you would like to find out more about the scheme or to become a volunteer, contact the Council’s Housing Advice Team on 08446 601111.
