Christmas Illuminations Switch On Skegness

Posted by Angela Gooch on November 29, 2007

Crowds gathered outside Hildreds Shopping Centre in Skegness this evening to see the Skegness Christmas Lights switch on by Radio Lincs FM presenter John Marshall.

The celebrations began by the manager of Hildred’s Centre, Pete Roffe firstly thanking the people who had made it all possible including Steve Andrews who had designed and made the Hildred’s Christmas decorations.

The Mayor of Skegness, Coun Ken Milner said that it had been the best turn out for some years.

John Marshall had a good rapport with the crowd until the final moment came to switch on the Skegness Christmas Illuminations. The countdown began and the crowd whooped with delight as Skegness was set ablaze with Christmas lights and snow.

John Marshall then went to visit Santa in his Grotto, followed closely by the Mayor and Mayoress of Skegness.

After the switch on ceremony, the crowd dispersed to visit the Hildred’s Centre and numerous stalls and shops on Lumley Road.

Pictured below are the Carnival Queen; John Marshall; The Mayor of Skegness; Carnival Rosebud; Town Clerk, Tony Cumberworth; Mayoress of Skegness, Mrs Deborah Milner; Carnival Princess and Mrs Cumberworth.

Where was Jolly?

Skegness’ mascot The Jolly Fisherman was notably absent from the festivities this year. On previous occasions he’s helped switch on the Skegness Christmas Lights.

So where was he? Anyone know?

Fly Tipping Illegal Dumping

Posted by Angela Gooch on November 28, 2007

Don’t Dump On Us!

OVER the past week, East Lindsey District Council has recorded a significant rise in the number of old tyres that have been dumped around the District. The total for the last week exceeds 720, with a particular problem in the Stain Lane area of Withern. In a normal week the Enforcement Team would expect an average of only ten tyres to be dumped through the entire district. The scale of the problem represents a major cost to the residents of the District and is a blight on the landscape. One of our biggest concerns is that East Lindsey has been targeted despite a rigorous waste and fly-tipping enforcement policy.

Cleansing Teams have been deployed to all of the worst affected areas, which have now been returned to a clean state.

East Lindsey District Council are asking residents to work with the Enforcement Team to identify the culprits responsible for dumping tyres.

Commenting on the problem, Duncan Hollingsworth, Head of the Waste Enforcement Team said ‘ This scale of fly tipping is way above average and we appreciate any help we can get from residents in tackling this problem. This is a deliberate act that makes our District look shabby, untidy and uncared for.’

If residents see any unusual activity, or witness illegal dumping, they should contact the Waste Enforcement Team who are trained to gather evidence and prosecute offenders. East Lindsey has a zero tolerance policy for fly tipping and will actively pursue any investigation involving the unlawful deposit of any waste.

Residents are also reminded to act with caution and not approach individuals involved in fly tipping. Information passed to the Enforcement Team will be treated with the strictest confidence. Together we can stamp out this blight.

If any person has any sees anything unusual or has information on fly-tipping please call 0800 195 5228 and speak in confidence to a Waste Enforcement Officer or e mail flytipping@e-lindsey.gov.uk

Christmas Tree Parade Complex Site

Posted by Angela Gooch on November 23, 2007

The lights have been switched on this evening on the first ever Christmas Tree to be erected on Grand Parade Skegness.

The giant 45 foot Christmas Tree has been donated to the people of Skegness by the Bola Brothers as a token of gratitude for the support the town gave to the Bola Family after the fire that destroyed the Parade Complex back in August of this year.

The festivities opened with Christmas carols sung by the local Seathorne school children accompanied by the Skegness Silver Band.

Then the moment came when the Christmas Tree lights were to be switched on…broadcast live on ITV, the Mayor of Skegness, Coun Ken Milner, and Mayoress Deborah Milner, assisted by Taj and TK Bola, pressed the switch. Breaths were bated for several seconds before the Christmas Tree burst into a riot of pretty lights.

Seconds later a firework display illuminated the sky over the Christmas Tree.

Pictured below under the tree are (left to right) TK Bola, Mayor of Skegness, Coun Ken Milner, Mayoress, Mrs Deborah Milner and Taj Bola.
